Required Materials

There is no text required for this course. We will be providing web-based resource recommendations throughout the course. The use of some free software programs is required.

If you wish to work on your own computer (laptop etc), you will need to install the required software. We'll be using Filezilla to manage files and Text Wranger (Mac only) to edit files. If you have a PC Laptop, you can substitute Notepad++ for Text Wrangler. All of these programs are free. We will also be doing some image editing with Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is installed on the Macs in the Lab. GIMP is a free open source image manipulation tool that can do the work we need. Note that GIMP requires extra support software, so read the requirements before installing.

You will be required to host your site on a server here at Eastman (storm.esm.rochester.edu). In Website Construction II, we'll move sites to www.yourname.com (external host). This process costs aprox. $70 per year ($10 for the domain name, $60 for hosting). For those unable to take Website Construction II, information on how to move to an external host and use "www.yourname.com" will be provided on request.

You will be required to provide digital content for your site, including, but not limited to: photography, audio, and video. Students who have taken Introduction to Digital Portfolio will be at an advantage.

Classroom Policies (Attendance, Lateness, etc.)

Attendance is absurdly important in this class. Bear in mind that I'll be presenting a great deal of technical information in this course and won't be able to repeat class information on an individual basis for those who decide to miss class; an absence can only be excused for a substantial reason. If more than 3 classes are missed you may not be able to complete the course.  You must notify me prior to class if you will not be in attendance. Student who are conscientious about notifying me of absences will be given an option to catch up on a one-on-one.

Food and beverages: This class is being held in a computer lab. Computers don't like coffee, soda, pizza, or other sticky things. Therefore, you should load up on caffeine and/or food before class, not during. Our use of the lab is provided through the kindness and generosity of Music Theory Dept.

Grading

Everyone's favorite topic... Although ALP asks that I keep this course from being “pointlessly academic”, I also wish to maintain an acceptable level of academic rigor and integrity. Please know that I have only the highest level of appreciation for the schedules you keep as Eastman students and will endeavor to limit our assignments, and keep them to focused and meaningful activities. That said, here's how we'll come up with our grade:

30% class participation

70% final project

Grades will be assigned according to the usual standard: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (0-59)

Schedule

A syllabus is posted on the course web site. It is subject to change.
